This weekend Binghamton Rowing traveled to Tonawanda Creek to compete in the inaugural Jim Schaab Regatta. Originally this regatta was going to be held in the Black Rock Canal, by the West Side Rowing Club; however, due to the old weather, the location was changed to the hosting crew’s plan B. It was a different course where groups of heats rowed up to the start and race down the three lane course one after the other. The change in venue also led to the scratch of the pairs events as the 2k course on the creek was winding down from the start, which began with a turn. That first wide turn also led officials to begin the floating start, staggered between lanes.
The day actually became warmer, providing rowers and coxswains with wonderful racing weather! The VW4+ and VM4+ were first boats to launch towards the start and race down the course, one after the other in their respective heats. Unfortunately, due to the new venue, times were not recorded for the races. The Men’s 4+ moved to finals and came in first place, winning a T-shirt medal.
The NW4+A & B and NM4+ boats launched together in the following group of heats. The NW4+A came down in first place, taking a spot in the finals. NW4+A came in third place for their finals heat. The NW4+B and NM4+ both came in second place in their respective heats. The VW8+ and VW8+ boats launched in the third group of heats and placed in second and third place respectively in their heats. Following the varsity eights, the NW8+ and NM8+ both came in second place in their respective heats. The Men’s Lwt 4+ went straight to finals, coming in second place.
Next week, Binghamton Rowing will be traveling down to New Rochelle, NY to participate in the Metropolitan Regatta.
